About

Josh Newton is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Homelessness Hub in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at University of California, San Diego. He holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy from the University of Texas at Arlington and a MA in U.S. History from University of California, San Diego. He was awarded the Dean's Distinguished Assistantship Fellowship at University of Texas at Arlington, the highest honor for graduate students in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs.

His research examines possibilities and pathways for more just, equitable, and sustainable housing and community development. His scholarship illuminates the role of unique stakeholders in community development; the existence of housing informality throughout the U.S.; hidden forms of housing precarity in unincorporated and urban communities; and the promise of community wealth building housing models. Josh's research has been supported by multiple grants and fellowships including the ​Pat Brandenburg Graduate Student Scholarship, the Crossing Latinidades Mellon Fellowship, and the Ted Bradshaw Student Research Award. This funding and more has allowed him to conduct extensive research in Dallas County, Texas and San Diego, California. Read more here.

Finally, Josh actively engages in academic service, most notably acting as Student Representative to the ACSP Governing Board. He also engages the public through speaking, writing, and leadership positions. Most recently, he has engaged in policy advocacy through committee positions and co-founding and organization to expand community wealth building models in San Diego.
